Hold on to your helmets, folks! The third edition of the Tour of Missouri begins Monday and it’s sure to be the most exciting yet. This year’s Tour will include the top teams in the world, among them is the Jelly Belly Pro Cycling Team, bringing eight riders to contest the top spots. The routes in this year’s Tour are different than previous years, and one thing the riders are happy about is the change of venue for the ITT.
“This is my first year at the race, but I’m looking forward to the hillier days. From what I’ve heard, I’m glad they’re changing the TT course,” said Phil Gaimon.
“The flatter time trial will suit the specialists more,” said Kiel Reijnen, “but it is a very similar length and style to the Nationals course so we have had some practice.”
“The route this year looks to just be consistently difficult stages with countless little climbs and descents,” Will Routley added. “I think this will make for some really heads up tactical racing. It will lead to tough days, and if one loses focus he could easily miss the break, so we’ll have to stay sharp all the time.”
When it comes to the competition, Jelly Belly knows it’s going to have its work cut out for it next week.
“Of course Columbia will be on the hunt for Cavendish to win some stages, so when setting up Brad for sprints we will have to look to those guys during the lead out,” Reijnen explained. “As far as the hard days go Garmin will be one to watch too. Long breakaways have had success in past years so guys like Danny Pate will be on the move. Astana of course comes here with a strong squad so we will have to keep an eye on them too.”
At the end of the day, the JB squad is happy to be coming back to Missouri for the third year.
“I really like racing from one side of the state to the other,” Reijnen said. “You really get a feel for the area doing that.”
“I love racing in Missouri,” Routley added. “I’ve done the race each of the past two editions, and have always had a great time and a great race. I’d say the communities really get behind the events and there is a great atmosphere. I’m looking forward to it.”
“I had no idea that this race would explode in to the monster it is today,” said Springfield resident Brad Huff. “This year’s tour will prove that Missouri is a showcase state that everyone will beg to be a part of for years to come!”
