Jelly Belly Riders Phil Gaimon and Nick Reistad lined up for the 30th Annual Athens Twilight race Saturday night before a raucous crowd of more than 30,000 spectators. Reistad, whose adopted home town is Athens,Ga., was eager to show off for his local fans and friends.
The race started off with a fury, with Reistad following an early second lap move by former Twilight champion Mark Heckman before settling in until the end. Off the bat, Gaimon was caught in a 20-man pile up on corner two of the first lap. Reports say Gaimon was seen flying over his handlebars and breaking his front wheel. Gaimon took his free lap and grabbed a neutral bike from the support staff.
While a flurry of attacks came and went, Reistad bided his time waiting for the opportune moment. Gaimon was forced to claw his way back to the front through the 150 man peloton after his first lap mishap.
With 15 laps to go, Reistad attacked the field to bridge to a promising break of seven riders, including eventual winner Heath Blackgrove, but as soon as the bridging group caught, three riders slipped off the front of the move. The remainder of the break sat up in front of a hard-charging peloton.
Back in the field, Reistad found Gaimon and brought him to the front to try and finish well in the sprint. Both riders finished in the peloton.
Reistad rode in the Historic Roswell Criterium on Sunday, and Gaimon will join for the remainder of Speedweek.
