Team Jelly Belly hit the ground running Tuesday at the Tour of Hainan prologue. While they are the only American team participating, they already proved they are a force to be reckoned with.
The prologue was a 3 km circuit in Sanya Bay, where three of the five Jelly Belly riders placed in the top 20. Kiel Reijnen, the newest addition to the team, finished in 16th place. Bernard Van Ulden placed 7th and Brad Huff took 3rd.
Not only did the individual riders strut their stuff, Jelly Belly led the team general classification by one second over Denmark.
“It’s still a long way to go – eight more stages,” said Danny Van Haute, team director, “but I think the team will ride very well. We are short two riders, but the team will do their best like always.”
